Short answer
Possibly, if the pilot will not hold after the thermocouple or thermopile tests good, the status light shows an overheat or internal fault, or the burner will not shut off. On many models a tripped high-limit means the whole valve must be replaced. It is licensed-plumber work, typically $150 to $550 installed (HomeGuide, 2025).
Key facts
- On a gas tank water heater, the thermostat is built into the gas control valve, so a failed thermostat means replacing the whole valve assembly.[1]
- HomeGuide puts gas control valve replacement at $150 to $550: $100 to $300 for the part and $50 to $250 for labor.[2]
- Rheem's lighting label: use only your hand on the gas control knob; if it will not turn by hand, do not try to repair it, call a qualified service technician.[5]
If you smell gas, stop here
Do not touch the gas control, light anything, or use switches or a phone inside. Leave on foot and call the gas utility and 911 from a safe distance[9]. A gas valve that leaks is an emergency, not a repair to schedule.
What the gas control valve does
On a gas tank water heater, the gas control valve is the box on the front of the tank near the bottom, with a knob and a temperature dial. It does several jobs at once[1][6]:
- Gas on and off. It lets gas reach the pilot and the main burner.
- Thermostat. A probe from the back of the valve sits in the tank water. When the water cools below the setting, the valve opens gas to the burner.
- Pilot safety. The thermocouple or thermopile in the pilot flame sends a small current that holds a safety magnet open. No flame, no current, no gas[6].
- High-limit (ECO). If the water gets too hot, a switch in the probe cuts the circuit and shuts the gas off[6].
Because the thermostat lives inside the valve, HomeGuide notes that a failed gas water heater thermostat means replacing the whole gas control assembly, not one part[1].
Signs the valve has failed
A failed gas valve is usually the last thing a plumber blames. HomeGuide notes that diagnosing it means first ruling out more common failures: pilot, igniter, thermocouple, thermostat and relief valve[2].
| Symptom | What it can mean | Who handles it |
|---|---|---|
| Pilot lights, goes out when you release the knob, and the thermocouple tests good | Weak safety magnet in the valve[5] | Licensed plumber |
| Status light shows an overheat code (4 flashes on one A.O. Smith series) | High-limit tripped; that series calls for valve replacement[4] | Licensed plumber |
| Status light shows a sensor or internal control failure | Valve electronics or temperature sensor failed[4] | Licensed plumber |
| Pilot stays lit with the knob turned to OFF | Valve not shutting off[4] | Licensed plumber, gas off now |
| Burner will not shut off, water too hot | Thermostat stuck open | Shut gas off, licensed plumber |
| Burner never fires with the pilot lit | Thermostat side failed, or setting too low | Check dial; then a plumber |
| Gas smell at the valve | Leak | Leave and call the utility[9] |
Overheat lockouts are not a reset. On the A.O. Smith Series 200/201 heaters, the service handbook says that if the high-limit sensor opens, the entire control must be replaced because the ECO is not resettable[6]. On the Series 300/301 heaters, the status light flashes 4 times for an activated high-limit, and the handbook's fix is to turn the gas off and replace the gas control valve[4]. A replacement valve does not fix the cause, so the plumber should check why the water overheated.
What a homeowner can safely do
- Read the status light if your valve has one. Count the flashes and match them to the chart on the valve or in the manual. Write it down before anything gets reset.
- Check the dial. Make sure the temperature dial was not turned to vacation or the lowest mark.
- Confirm gas supply. If other gas appliances also fail, call the utility or propane supplier.
- Use only your hand on the knob. Rheem's lighting label says never use tools; if the knob will not turn by hand, do not try to repair it and call a qualified service technician, because force or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion[5].
- If the burner will not shut off, turn off the manual gas shutoff valve on the supply pipe and call[5][7].
- After a flood, do not use the heater. Rheem says a heater with any part that has been under water must be replaced, not repaired[5].
Do not remove the valve, loosen gas fittings, or bypass a lockout.
Myth: "A gas valve swap is an easy DIY job"
Some cost guides list a DIY price for a gas valve swap[2]. We do not recommend it. The job means disconnecting the gas supply, draining the tank to remove the valve and its probe, sealing a new threaded connection on a pressurized tank, reconnecting gas, leak testing, and confirming gas pressure. Many areas also treat gas work as permitted, licensed work. An error can mean a gas leak, a fire or carbon monoxide. Hire an independent licensed plumber.
What it costs
| Source (date) | Item | Range |
|---|---|---|
| HomeGuide (Jan 2024) | Gas control valve, part only | $100 to $300[2] |
| HomeGuide (Jan 2024) | Labor | $50 to $250; the job takes 1 to 1.5 hours[2] |
| HomeGuide (Aug 2025) | Gas control valve replacement, installed | $150 to $550[1] |
| Modernize (Aug 2026) | Gas control valve replacement, with combustion and safety testing | $250 to $750[3] |
Service call minimums of $50 to $200 may apply[1]. These are national ranges, not quotes.
Repair or replace?
A gas valve is one of the bigger tank repairs. Rheem's guidance: repair units under about 6 to 8 years old, consider replacing at 10 years or more, and replace when the repair costs more than 50% of a new unit[8]. Check the build date with our age decoder before you approve a valve on an older tank.
When to call a pro
- Any gas smell near the valve (call the utility first).
- An overheat, sensor or internal fault code on the status light.
- A pilot that will not hold after the thermocouple or thermopile tests good.
- A burner that will not shut off, a knob that will not turn by hand, or any heater that has been under water.
More questions
Can I just reset the gas valve after it overheats?
On many models, no. A.O. Smith's service handbooks say the high-limit inside the gas control is not resettable, and an overheat code calls for replacing the valve. A plumber should also find out why the water overheated.
Is a gas valve worth replacing on an old heater?
Often not. Rheem suggests replacing the whole heater when a repair costs more than 50% of a new unit, and considering replacement past about 10 years. Check the build date first.
